Te Waka Tiwai.

Today we researched a waka named waka tiwai, I went to mindful movers so I didn't get the first part. But after we got back we were given 6 questions, we created a document and wrote our information in 2 blocks.  The information we were supposed to get was something like, the names it was given over the years, what it was used for, etc. My group nominated me to make slides so we could put the pictures of the tools, the waka in the olden days, and the materials. After lots of hard work we then realised that those 2 blocks were only preparing us to made a poster of the waka we were assigned, so then we were given a piece of paper to draw our plan in less then a block then we were given our big paper to actually do our big poster. We were barely halfway finished when we had to write this blog.

Tangata Rongonui.

Today in class I created an biography about Shaun Johnson.

Whaea Jasmine told us that we had to pick a famous kiwi, then she put some examples on the board, at first I picked Moana Jackson but then I realized that some people might get confused on his? gender, so I picked someone else because I was also confused on his? gender. Then I picked Annette Sykes, and realized that she wasn't all that exciting to write an biography about, so then I thought about it, and I ultimately chose Shaun Johnson.

Shaun Johnson is a rugby player who is 30 years old, she was born on September 9th of 1990.

I learnt that he has a netball player wife who's name is Kayla Cullen and is 29 years old, he also has a daughter named Millah who is a couple months old, since she was born last year in August.

Kayla Cullen and Shaun Johnson were married a year before they had Millah, Shaun Johnson has been through many rugby groups before staying in the Cronulla Sharks.

Shaun Johnson was born in Auckland, New Zealand. and grew up in Auckland, his mother who's Laotian left him, his father, and 3 other brothers to go back and live in her home country. When Shaun Johnson grew up he went to Orewa College and played Australian rules football, basketball, touch, and rugby union.

He won several awards like the Golden Boot Award for the best player in the world, and Man of the Match award, he's played for around 13 years and is probably going to quit his rugby career this year.

He played as a half-back or five-eighth, he's 5'10ft and he's still alive today as he hasn't suffered any life threatening illness or injuries.

Reflection: At the start I shouldn't have been very judge-y picking who I should write a biography about and the research part was really hard since there was a lot of sites where it's just news about past events and will he be coming back for 2022, I didn't love doing this but at the same time I didn't necessarily hate it either. The only part about writing the biography would be writing this blog post right now cause I can share somebody who I don't know about with everybody.

What's your favorite sport?

Tupuna Research

On Wednesday I started my Tupuna research, we were all split up into groups. Whaea Jasmine got the year 7 and 8's to stand up in a line then she got the year 6's up, she put me into Miriam's group. We were given 3 questions the questions were: What was the first maori iwi on New Zealand? What waka did they come here on? Why did Ngati Mamoe travel further to the south?

I eventually finished 2 of 3 of the question before we had to move on, then we were to pick a tupuna.we were most interested in, then we met up with the people who picked the person you thought was interesting. I picked Tutekawa, my group consisted of: Travis, Makaia, Amahri, Harlem, Mihi and me, our main goal for our tupuna research was to pick a tupuna research them and come back to your group after you've found enough research, then explain who that person is, what they did, where they went, which iwi are they in, and any other valuable information that could be useful to your group.

Tutekawa is the first cousin to Rakiwhakaputa the leader of Ngati Kuri Hapu, and Tukiauau the leader of Ngati Mamoe, he has a wife called Hinehikoia and he has a son called Rakitamau. He murdered Tuahiriri's wives Hinekaitaki and Tuarawhati, then the brother of those two girls murdered Tutekawa in Waikakahi, his name is Whakuku. Tutekawa was already very old at the time.

Reflection: I did lots of research and work and my group will be very pleased with the work I'll bring to them and I don't think there's anything major I need to work on for next time.

Who's the most interesting maori person you've ever learnt about?

My Extravagant Koru Art

in class I created some koru art, the main purpose is to represent me and my family as well as my ancestors.

First I drew four sketches and chose which one I wanted to base off of for the final product, then I got a new piece of paper and drew the sketch that I wanted to draw that best suited my family tree. Then after I finished I applied watercolor pencils on the paper, when I was done I went over the paper with water so that the colors would pop and at least try to stand out.
Here's a picture of my first koru art.

After I'd finished my first piece of koru art whaea Caroline suggested we do another koru art piece, so I grabbed a black piece of paper and instead of a sketch this time I grabbed an idea from my imagination and, started drawing with pastels. After I'd done the sketching process I colored in with more pastels! I kept drawing, and reshaping, and coloring, and shading until it looked perfect in my eyes.
Here's a picture of my second koru art piece.

The big koru in the middle represents my whole family from both sides of the family (my mum's side and my dad's side) , the upside down koru that's smaller on the left represents my dad's family tree, the one on the right that's the same size on the opposite side represents my mum's family tree, the colored in koru on the left represents my parents, the smaller koru on the right that are colored in represent me and my younger sister Eva, and the moon doesn't actually represent anything it's just there so that there isn't random moonlight.

On the first koru art piece, the big koru represents my whole family tree, the ocean represents how we all have lots of ancestors enough to create an ocean, the two koru on the side there represent me and my sister Eva, the upside down koru next to the leaves doesn't represent anything, the leaves next to the koru don't represent anything either, and the rows of leaves next to the huge koru represent the generations and generations in my family.

My favorite koru art is the first one since it took several weeks if not, more to make it since the coloring process took a long time.

Is your family interesting?
